• A new exhaust .brake has been developed by the Australian company, Smiths Exhaust Brakes (Aust.) Pty Ltd, of Sydney. The usual butterfly arrangement in most exhaust brakes has been substituted by a sliding valve. This, claims Smiths, prevents the carbon build-up sometimes associated with butterfly valves, the slide valve automatically scraping itself clean when it operates.
British Leyland in Australia has recently decided to use the exhaust brakes as standard equipment on its 690 series turbo-charged engines. .
The Smiths brake includes a stainless steel cylinder and control valve in its construction and corrosion and rust are prevented on its interior by the use of PTFE, glassfibre and viton.
