as winter must come, but the point is, it may be mild or severe. In any case, the damage of frost is always present, and with it comes the risk of cracked cylinders and other troubles.
In this connection the M.O.W.T. has issued some useful advice, the main points of which are as follow:-If a vehicle has to stand for an appreciable time the best precaution is an empty water system. Before applying for ethylene-glycol, which is Governmentcontrolled, consider alternative means for retaining heat in the engine, as supplies of this anti-freeze are strictly Limited. Where, however, no alternative method is practicable, application should be made to your Regional Transport Commissioner, giving reasons why it is essential.
A mixture of one part and three parts of water -should be sufficient; to prevent damage by any frost likely to occur here. When topping up a leaky water system the same mixture should be added, but, ineidentally, stop the leaks to prevent a recurrence of losses. Various brands of commercial antifreeze have been -approved by the
Ministry of Supply. These will be available to consumers without special authorization. The requirements of the Civil Defence, Police and National Fire rvie are dealt with by the Ministry of Home Security.
If, despite ' precautions, cylinder blocks, heads, or water pumps be damaged, the possibility of ,repairing any cracks should be explored. Advise on this matter will be given willingly by the Director of Vehicle Main tenance, M.O.W.T., Berkeley Square House, London, W.1. In these days, however, prevention is far more economical than the cure.
