Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE GOVERNMENT has ruled out the mandatory imposition of safety sensors for trucks in its response to the Transport Committee’s road safety proposals.

The Select Committee had called for the introduction of sensors as part of its review of the government’s Strategic framework for road safety, which was published in May 2011.

However, in its response issued last week, the Department for Transport (DfT) stated: “The mandatory introduction of any new technology would need to be agreed at EU level. It would require evidence that the technology is reliable and that the systems will deliver the expected benefit rather than simply imposing additional cost.” It also stressed its support for voluntary safety initiatives undertaken by some operators, which have included the fitting of safety devices such as sensors.
