MAN DISPLAYED an example from its forthcoming Euro-5 engine line-up at Amsterdam, demonstrating its ability to meet the new cleaner emissions regulations without the need for AdBlue-reliant SCR technology. This follows hot on the heels of the launch of the new Scania Euro-5 13-litre engine, also with EGR technology.
The MAN engine has sequential, fixed-geometry turbochargers — Scania employs a single variable-geometry unit— and a chargecooling device to ensure the EGA works efficiently. All MAN engines will adopt this technology, apart from the new V8, which will rely on SCR.
Seen at Amsterdam as a static demonstration, the new engine will go into full production in the first quarter of 2009, in plenty of time for the October 2009 Euro-5 deadline for new vehicles.
