Business:

The LCCC offers a distribution centre and delivery service area for construction materials to four major building projects in central London.

Objective:

The main objective for setting up the LCCC was to understand the potential benefits that this type of urban freight distribution can provide and facilitate the efficient supply of materials from manufacturer to site while: • Improving project efficiency through just-in-time delivery of materials, tools and plant • Reducing traffic congestion in central London • Reducing journey times for suppliers delivering materials • Improving safety by reducing congestion on construction sites • Allowing trade contractors to concentrate on their core tasks

Results:

In the 18 months from Januar) 2006 to April 2007 the centre highlighted some significant savings and improvements across the four sites including

• A 73% reduction (31,422kg in CO, emissions • A 70% reduction in the number of delivery vehicles travelling to the construction sites • Elimination of deliveries by artics • Improved service levels wit fewer failed and late deliverie: • Greater flexibility as cornea flies can order smaller quantities for each site while suppliers can send full loads to the LCCC • A reduction in local conges tion with fewer trucks waiting be unloaded at sites • Reduced stock levels at construction sites
