Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

itsubishi-Fuso unveils its 12.8-litre HDEP engine at the Tokyo Motor ;how, but is tight-lipped about the technical details. Oliver Dixon reports.

IITSUBISHI-FUSO has lowcased a 12.8-litre variant of ■ aimler's Heavy Duty Engine latform (HDEP).

The unveiling, at the Tokyo lotor Show, follows last week's Lunch of the US variant of HDEP le 15-litre Detroit Diesel 1D15 ('New Mercedes engine Lakes debut in the US'. CM 5 October), Although Fuso is remaining nnewhat tight-lipped about the ngine's technical details, CM understands it will debut in Japan in time for the JP09 exhaust emissions protocol which comes into force in 2009.

The unit uses the same ARCS — Amplified Common Rail System — as the DD15 unit, and Fuso sources indicate that injection pressure is about 1$50 bar.

However, further questioning revealed that the engine is designed to work with injection pressures in excess of 2,500 bar.

There seems to be no evidence of the turbo-compounding used on the DD15 unit — and, more intriguingly, little sign of any SCR equipment. Speaking to CM at the Tokyo show, Daimler truck boss Andreas Renschler referred to the emissions reduction system as a -magic box". Whether or not this means that Daimler is shying away from SCR and AdBlue for JP09 remains to be seen.

A European version of HDEP is expected to become available in time for the introduction of Euro-5 in October 2009. The Actros is due a facelift during 2008. and we predict a new version in 2011.
