Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

D ESTRICTIVE legislation in many IN-States of America, various aspects of which have recently been the subject of comment in The Commercial Motor —has made road-transport operation very close to uneconomic in certain industries in those areas. This was the underlying reason why the Morgan Packing Co., of Austin, Indiana, selected White Super Power vehicles for their semi-trailer fleet, for, as a type, such machines have a high power-toweight ratio, saving about 9 cwt. compared with various other makes of the same gross capacity.

The ability to use this weight reduction for additional pay-load is an important factor, because the Morgan Packing Co. operates in many of those States that have low gross-weight regulations. Further, profits on canned goods in America are split-penny affairs and, without the fullest possible load

ing, distribution in certain areas might easily become unprofitable.

Flexibility is an essential point in the sale of canned goods. For this reason, the fleet does not operate on fixed routes, but machines are sent out to different parts of the country as the demand arises. Each loaded with 20,000 lb. of foodstuffs, the vehicles leave daily for such widely separated places as Miami, New York, Oklahoma City and Minneapolis.

The company's fleet of 164 White Super Power lorries travelled 9,331,117 miles last year and distributed more than 125,000,000 tins of Scott County foods.

Although fixed schedules are not operated, the transport manager has, of course, acquired the necessary experience on which to base estimates of the time occupied for the various trips.

Since the introduction of the new • There are 50 units in the fleet which have been painted with the slogan, "Safety is Free, Are You Getting Your Share?" The company must have done, because last year the fleet travelled 1,500,000 miles without an accident of any kind.

Records kept over a number of years, shoW that during 1939 250,000 U.S. gallons of petrol were saved judging by comparisons with figures for the same mileage when other types of machine were used.

Further economical statistics are shown in respect of maintenance and repairs to both tractor and trailer units.

In this department, also, statistics are carried out to the third decimal place, and, compared with standard costing, it is reckoned that last year the company was a total of 74,648 dollars on the right side in respect of the maintenance of its fleet.
