A TRUCK DRIVER who complained that his delivery round was too large has been awarded more than £5,000 compensation against DHL Express after alleging he was harassed, bullied and intimidated by management at the Coleshill depot in Warwickshire.

The allegations were made by Matthew Green at Birmingham Employment Tribunal, which decided he had been unfairly constructively dismissed by DHL Express.

Green alleged his delivery round of 50 calls a day was too much, and he eventually resigned following several disputes with the management.

He also alleged he had been spoken to in an aggressive manner, had his work scrutinised and criticised, and been subjected to harassment, bullying and intimidation following his return to work from sickness.

The Tribunal was told that Paul Brant, a manager at Coleshill, tightened the system on absence from work following high levels of absent workers. Green, who suffered from a bad back, accused him of reallocating him a delivery round involving a heavy workload.

Green accused another manager of humiliating him over a split package, which resulted in the breakage of baby food jars over other parcels. He alleged the harassment and bullying made him ill and accused the management of setting unattainable targets.

DHL Express denied the allegations and claimed Green had failed to first notify his supervisors about his bad back, something they only found out about when he only carried out 14 of 40 deliveries.

The firm also complained Green had failed to code outbound deliveries in the correct manner on several occasions and that he had neglected his duty.

Tribunal chairman John Parkin said Green had been unfairly constructively dismissed, although the Tribunal did not believe there had been any concerted plan to cause his departure.

But he added that, save for a phased return to work following his illness, the firm had done nothing to encourage him to stay.

The Tribunal awarded Green £5,305 compensation.
