• Avon and Somerset police found that 75% of 3,000 trucks inspected in random spot checks had mechanical defects, including faults with steering, brakes, tyres and lights. Nearly half the faulty vehicles had such serious defects that they received immediate prohibitions.

On one 38-tanner vehicle examiners discovered that part of the braking system had fallen off. This left the overloaded trailer with no brakes but the driver had continued his journey without making any repairs. Superintendent Tim Dow, head of traffic, says: "The results of these roadside checks are extremely frightening. They show that around 14% of vehicles on our roads have potentially dangerous defects. The drivers of those vehicles are putting their own and other people's lives at risk,"

Avon and Somerset police, together with the Vehicle Inspectorate, carried out 116 roadside checks during the past 12 months.
