Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Two 36ft long, tandem-axle, flat platform semi-trailers, one in ckd form, have been shipped to Robert Hudson and Sons (Pty) Ltd, Johannesburg, by Highway Trailers (Great Britain) Ltd. They are to be used as prototypes for the manufacture of semitrailers under licence and later as demonstration units.

Mr J. Herdm an-Grant, director and general manager of Highway Trailers, said that the trailers to be built would offer a tare weight much below that of units already in use in South Africa.

"The two trailers we have sent to Johannesburg," he said, "have a tare weight of only 4 tons 3cwt, whereas those with a comparable specification at present available in the country have an unladen weight of over 6 tons. And this, despite the fact that we have had to effect certain strengthening features because of road and other operating conditions,

The trailers are fitted with Rubery Owen `R'-Series running gear and suspension. Rolled steel angle side raves are used The prototypes were specially designed from components readily available in South Africa. Running gear and suspension are obtainable through Ruberowen (SA) Ltd, Johannesburg. a new plant having recently been established by Ruberowen Metal Pressings Ltd, Pretoria, for the manufacture of complete axle units. Standard Highway brake equipment is also manufactured in South Africa by the Clayton Dewandre Co Ltd, and the Westinghouse Brake and Signal Co Ltd.

Although BS 968 high-yield stress steel is produced in the country it is not as yet available in the sections used for the main beams of the trailers and as an interim measure these beams are now being shipped by Highway direct to Johannesburg. For the floorboards, Robert Hudson will be using locally available Merranti hardwood which is also lighter than the Keruing fitted to standard Highway units.
