Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Freight Transport Association on Tuesday announced two major extensions to its technical services. They are a full technical consultancy service and the addition of an extensive safety inspection to its range of vehicle inspection services. At the same time driver defect report forms became available under the vehicle check system.

For the first time the FTA offers members in depth advice on all engineering matters affecting the operation of goods vehicles. Advice will be given on any subject, but in particular help is available with:

D Vehicle specification for a particular job.

El Investigations into all types of maintenance systems.

O Appointment of maintenance staff.

(71 Repair shop design.

In co-operation with vehicle manufacturers and dealers FTA can prepare a specification to meet individual operational requirements. The final selection of make of' vehicle would be left to the member.

Advice on maintenance systems comes in two parts: (1) a complete evaluation of a member's existing system. (2) advice on improvements necessary to upgrade the system—perhaps, for example, to allow for an increased fleet margin on an operator's licence. Planning, servicing, frequency, inspection and record systems all form part of the maintenance systems consultancy.

For new staff appointments FTA can provide an experienced technical man to sit in on interviews and recommend on final selection.

Depending on the nature of the problem. consultancy advice will be provided either by the Association's chief engineer or one of its nine divisional engineers. Charges for consultancy work will depend on the work involved in a particular investigation.

The new, shorter safety inspection is designed to tie-in with the vehicle inspection requirements of operators' licensing. How often it should be carried out will depend on mileage, operating conditions, and other general maintenance checks. It covers the "roadworthiness" items listed in the -Ministry of Transport Testers Manual" and concentrates on those items which require immediate attention if found to be faulty.
