Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Bob Holliday • An LDoY Centre champion aged only 16? It couldn't happen in the UK but it can in the Isle of Man—where they train 'em young—and on Sunday April 26 a lad who obtained his first driving licence only last year put up by far the best score in Manxland's first eliminator contest.

Ian Corkill, a mechanic-driver working for Mylchreests Motors Ltd (team award winners), dropped 87 penalty points, driving a BMC van in class A. Next best score was 105. After he had received his overall winner's trophy Ian learned from his delighted employer that his appearance in the Finals was assured—by then he will be 17 and entitled to drive on English roads.

With the Island's Road Safety Officer Mr T. Rimmer in charge of "admin" and car rally expert Mr Selwyn Pye as clerk of the course, this newly-fledged Centre got off to a good start with an entry of 29. Organization, as one would expect from a community that has been accustomed for nearly 70 years to participating in motor and motorcycle events, was spot on, only two classes, F and H, being unrepresented—for the simple reason that there seems to be no vehicles of these types on the Island.

At the "weigh in" at the TT grandstand no competitors produced hgv licences, nor were they asked any questions about driving hours—for another simple reason: as with Northern Ireland, the 1968 Transport Act does not apply there.

A 6+-mile road route included five doublemanned check points and the manoeuvring tests were laid out at the former TA Drill Hall, wherein the trophies and replicas were handed over by representatives of the donors—the IoM Road Safety committee, E. B. Christian and Co Ltd. Mylchreests Motors, Esso, Shell-Mex and BP, past Rotarians, and the Island Garages group. I left with the impression that Manx patriotism will see to it that Ian Corkill will not be the only Islander we shall welcome at Bramcote in September.
