Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Rip. LEWIS H. CANNON, who became general manager of 1V1 Eastbourne Transport Department on the death of Mr. John Atherton last year, has been remarkably quick in producing his report for the year ended March 31 last. He is fortunate to be able to announce a halt in the general decline in traffic over the past five years. The results might have been even better but for what he picturesquely describes as the " sub-standard" weather last summer.

He would like the Easter, Whitsun and August Monday bank holidays to be changed to dates when the chances of good weather are brighter and hours of daylight are longer. He thinks what is at present Easter Monday should be changed to the first Monday of May, and Whit-Monday to the first Monday of July. He would put back the August holiday until the last Monday in August or the first in September. The religious festivals would continue to be regulated by the church calendar.

Gummed Up

CALLING to rectify a complaint of difficult starting of a small oil engine in service with the G.P.O., a representative of a leading oil-engine manufacturer inquired what lubricating oil was being used.

"Oh, the usual Post Office thick, came the reply. Somewhat mystified by this description, which might so easily have covered the latest adhesive for 3c1. stamps, the engineer made further inquiries and found that this was a term denoting S.A.E. 30 oil.

a34 Happily, a change to S.A.E. 10 oil—now named Post Office thin, perhaps?—provided a speedy cure for the trouble.

Double Jubilee

T1E record attendance at last Friday's annual dinner of the Road Haulage Association's Northern Area at Newcastle upon Tyne must have been a source of special satisfaction to Mr. Frank Milton, the secretary, for April 24 was his 60th birthday and the function was the 25th anniversary of the area's first dinner.

Battling Haulier

iNGEMAR 10HANSSON, European boxing champion, has I invested the money earned in boxing in a haulage and contracting business, and has recently bought a new Volvo oilengined lorry to transport gravel from his pit. He is now in hard training for the world championship heavyweight match against Floyd Patterson in New York next month.

Every British haulier should follow his example. It is the best possible training for hard knocks. ,

Knock Out

HE British traditionally lose every battle except the last. I Likewise Mr. William James Thompson, a former haulier, of Coleshill, about whom Mr. I. L. C. -Dilcock, the Registrar of Walsall Bankruptcy Court, said: "The filing of his petition was the only sensible thing he has done during his business career."
