THE loss of traffic worth £1,500 a year from Sentinel (Shrewsbury), Ltd., was the cause of strong objection by Lewis Brothers (Haulage), Ltd., Minsterley, to an application before the West Midland Deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. L Hal!,

last week. E. T. M. Owen, Hadnall, sought to add an articulated oinfit of 5+ tons and a rigid vehicle of 4 tons unladen to their four-vehicle A licence.

Mr. J. Foley Egginton, for the applicants, said work for Sentinel had increased from £295 in 1956-57 to £7,223 last year. Hiring had risen in the past twp years from £1,021 to £3,066 and casual customers were being turned away because of shortage of vehicles.

Mr. D. Skelding, for Lewis Bros., said Owen's difficulties were of their own making in seeking to monopolize the Sentinel traffic. Lewis Bros. had a substantial account there in 1956 and were paid £1,518. Since February, 1957, they had received no work and had been told that the company were having difficulty in keeping their own. vehicles fully

occupied. .

Asked why he had not hired Lewis' vehicles for Sentinel work, Mr. Owen replied he had been told not to.

Mr. C. Radforth, plant engineer of Sentinel, said that because of expanding production they were increasingly seeking outside assistance for delivery all over the country. They employed six private hauliers of whom Owen was the principal, the others being mainly on a return-load basis. British Road Services carried 16 per cent, of the outside traffic in 1958 and British Railways 27 per cent.

Mr. Radforth said Owen had provided the best rate and service. Lewis' vehicles had been barred because of some trouble with his predecessor. If their facilities were now available at an economic rate th'ere was no reason why the company should not employ them.

Sentinel's"traffic clerk might be able to assist the Court further concerning difficulties due to late arrival of Owen's vehicles, and regarding Lewis' services.

The hearing was adjourned for the production of this evidence.
