The Application Form and the Undertaking Required of an Intending Bus Operator in the North-East Coast Area.

-1

N our issue for April 10th, 1928, we were able, by

the courtesy of the Minister of Transport and of the Chief Constable of Middlesbrough, to give complete details of the scheme which has been devised by the Tees-side Regional Committee, under the chairmanship of Mr. Henry Riches, 0.13.E., the Chief Constable aforementioned, for the co-ordination of the control of the various public passenger-service undertakings in the north-east coast area. The scheme is proving, day by day, to be thoroughly successful, the working throughout the area being quite smooth and with but two objections among all the operators to any of the conditions which have been laid down. Our article described the scheme and gave the causes that had led to the devising of it, and we set out the various

recommendations of the committee for the more effective control and supervision of the services and of the vehicles. These have taken' shape in the application which has to be made to the local authorities for a licence to stand and ply for hire and in the covering letter accompanying the application in which the applicant undertakes certain responsibilities. Mr. Riches has kindly furnished us, for the benefit of our readers, with copies of these two documents and we append them in full. From the covering letter it will be seen that the interests If the travelling public have been safeguarded, that facilities for supervision are guaranteed and that undue competition with the municipal services is prevented, the committee considering them entitled to this protection.
