A Liverpool man caught running a vehicle dis playing someone else's 0licence identity disc and a tax disc from a car was sentenced to 16o hours' community service.

Leslie Spires, of West Derby, Liverpool, had been committed to Liverpool Crown Court for sentence after pleading guilty before the City's magistrates to using an 0

licence disc with intent to deceive and the fraudulent use of a vehicle excise licence (CM 23-29 March).

Prosecuting for the Vehicle Inspectorate, Jennifer Caldwell said Spires displayed the tax disc from his own car and an 0-licence disc issued to NET Distribution for a different vehicle to give the impression his vehicle was taxed and licensed. Enquiries revealed Spires did not have an 0-licence.

Defending, Jeremy Bown said Spires had found contract work and was saving to pay for an 0-licence and the tax in order to trade properly, which he had done. Nothing was found wrong with the vehicle and the back duty had been paid. He argued the offences were not that serious.

Recorder John Rines said he considered them serious, and ordered Spires to pay Lisa costs.
