DAs young bridegrooms through the ages have learned, often to their cost, young brides melt anyone's heart and can twist mere chaps round their ring fingers anytime they choose. So it was that West Country bride Lorraine Downing exercised this ancient prerogative when she persuaded her local council to delay roadworks in West Buckland, Devon, to prevent wet tarmac from staining her gown. They could have asked her to cross the road but, wisely, chose not to.
