We set the benchmark for the test as 3,500kg GVW, medium height, medium wheelbase. with around 120hp. Given the many options available in this sector and the constraints that many press fleets are under, there was a fair amount of latitude involved to get the assembled group. While avoiding comparing apples with bananas, were certainly comparing Granny Smiths with Bramleys. This means that the fuel economy figures are for information rather than direct comparison. Before the test, we measured acceleration times and noise levels at the proving ground. When it came to hit the road, the route from Surrey to Radnorshire and back was split into tour sections, with an overnight halt halfway. Each section is meant to have some motorway, some urban traffic and country roads. Speed limits were rigidly observed, but driving was in a normal style. At each halt, drivers changed around so that everyone drove four vans. Each driver awarded points out of 20 in each of 18 areas.
