PORTSMOUTH-BASED MoT tester The HGV Centre has become the first independent business to sign VOSA's Authorised Testing Facility (ATE) contract.
The fledgling company has been trading for just a year. operating a Designated Premises (DP) since last November, but firmly believes the new arrangement gives it a head start over rivals. Karl Smith. senior business development manager, says signing the contract proves to its customers it is here to stay: "Being a DP was fantastic, but to be an MT you are signing on to a programme and committing to being here for some time. 'there are other people in our area moving over to DP status and we feel we need to be an ATE Other independents are frightened to take that step and sign up as an ATE But no pain, no gain."
The HOV Centre has combined its new status with offering customers testing five days a week. It has a 25m drive-through test lane and Smith says it is considering offering a 24-hour service in the future.
