Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MERCEDES-BENZ has launched a range of Euro-4 and 5 compliant vehicles, allowing some European operators to benefit from fuel and tax savings from the beginning of 2005.

Compliance has been achieved by increasing the compression ratios and peak pressures across the existing engine range. Engine blocks are made from vermicular graphite cast iron, which offers a better strength-to-weight ratio than conventional cast iron; the engines also feature SCR catalysts..

Although compliance with Euro-4 (due September 2006) and Euro-5 (September 2009) is not a particularly pressing issue for truck operators at present, MercedesBenz explained its decision to preempt the legislation by pointing to the financial advantages the new engines will offer: -Euro-4 gives most European truck operators a marked fuel and tax advantage," a spokesman says."If the technology exists now, then making it available ahead of time offers our customers an operational benefit that we would be wrong to delay."
