Etch glass to fight truck thieves

e read with interest your Crimeline page each week, in particular on behalf of our clients; many of whom have been the victims of theft, thus creating problems for all concerned.

We also read your Crime Response feature in one of your recent issues, which also provides a very depressing picture of the theft situation in these difficult, troubled times.

There is one further crime prevention course of action you did not mention, in that an inexpensive method to possibly help deter thieves is to etch the vehicle registration number on every section of cab windscreen and window glass (often paid for by the insurance company, incidentally, without affecting no-claims discount) and also to etch all lamp glass and mirrors, etc.

Where possible on the windows the etching can be highlighted by a sticker which points out the registration number impressions. This may possibly deter the potential thief, or at least oblige him to walk further along the rank to find a vehicle which is not etched!

We appreciate that this method is not foolproof, but if it inconveniences some types of thieves surely this helps a little, especially if it stops the simple practice of just having to change registration plates in order to sell or export a stolen vehicle.

Low pay from agencies

Iam writing in response to your article on agency drivers (CM17-23 June, p28).

I am currently working for an agency doing Class 1 reefer 32 and 38-tonne driving. The rates of pay are £3 per hour, Monday-Friday between 530arn and 5.30pm with no overtime rate at all.

Between 5,30pm and 530arn Monday-Friday the rate is £3.75 per hour, again with no overtime. Co Saturday the all-day rate is £3.75 per hour and on Sunday, £5.13. Are these rates of pay legal? Why are we not covered by Wages Councils? I have been with this agency for almost three years and have worked mainly with one company. But my requests for a permanent job have fallen on deaf ears, despite the fact I have never been the subject of a serious complaint and am invariably smartly dressed I believe the United Road Transport Union is wrong to start up its own agency. It won't help the drivers. Agencies should be abolished in order to mate proper jobs—full time employment with decent levels of pay. P Wood, Middlesbrough, Cleveland
