Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANEW R.P. four-pawl-type adjuster for the brake-shoe facings is to be fitted to ail Leyland heavy-duty passenger chassis. This device, which takes up wear in the facings to the order of 0.00001 in., maintains a clearance between the facing and brake drum of about 0.018 in.

Previously, Leyland passenger machines were equipped, as standard, with the Clayton Dewandre R.P. triplepawl brake adjuster. The increased number of compensating pawls in the device now fitted not only gives a finer and more frequent adjustment, but it differs from the previous unit in the method of tracking the pawls. Instead of the latter being arranged alongside one another and each pawl using its own track on the ratchet, the pawls are now mounted radially round the ratchet and thus use a common track.

It should be mentioned that the R.P. automatic brake adjuster has formed a standard fitting on Leyland heavy-duty passenger vehicles for the past three years.

NO LOADS ON 5s.-DUTY TRACTORS

TAX on farm tractors used for the carriage of produce has been engaging the attention of the N.F.U. and headquarters have intimated to the Flintshire branch that the use of a transport box turns the tractor into a load-carrying vehicle and excludes it from the 5s. rate of duty, which applies only to tractors used on the roads for towing an implement or a trailer.

As soon as alterations were made to

the tractor which permitted it to carry a load itself, it became a load-carrying vehicle on which must be paid the appropriate rate of tax applicable to a goods vehicle. The Flintshire branch chairman told members that the remedy was to use a trailer.
