Guy Sheppard reports how a Cotswold tipper firm's friends came to its aid.

THREE RESIDENTS who complained about noise and pollution from a family-owned haulage firm have provoked an unprecedented backlash from fellow villagers.

A public inquiry to review FG Bond & Son's 0-licence was packed with people supporting the company's right to continue operating from the centre of Marshfield in the Cotswolds.

Paul Carless, who represents the tipper operator, says 80 letters of support were sent in. including one from the parish council.

"Marshfield is just about surviving as a live, working village but there's a tiny minority that want to lum it into a dormitory chocolate box village,he says. "I had over 100 people from the village supporting me at the inquiry. I've never heard of such support for an operator before."

Bond has been based in High Street, Marshfield, since 1934 —far longer than the three neighbours who cornplained, according to Carless.

Although they did not want the business closed down, their objections provoked accusations of hypocrisy and mischief-making from fellow villagers.

Western deputy traffic commissioner Robert Lockwood imposed minor environmental conditions on Bond. but Carless says the company would have agreed to the neighbours' demands if they had bothered to ask.

It was unfortunate that the full weight of the law was brought to bear on this It's probably cost the company around f.5,000 in total."

Helen Ribbings, granddaughter of the company founder. says Bond has won numerous awards including two Truckfest titles this year for best kepi working fleet.

The company specialises in delivering quarry products and is licensed for 18 vehicles.
