A buyer's market beckons for used vans in the New Year.

Hectic trading in lightweight second-hand vans during the preChristmas rush could have a sting in the tail for owners in the New Year, according to Glass's Information Services. George Alexander, chief editor of commercial vehicles, believes volumes will be up at the auctions in January, creating a buyers' market.

Among the car-derived vans, demand is high for the Renault Clio and Peugeot 206, with pickings low enough to keep prices up and competition keen, with the Vauxhall Corsavan and Ford Fiesta van hot on their heels. Of the Fiesta Alexander says only ones in top condition will go while average and less will "falter".

Vauxhall'sAstravan rules the roost further up the CDV scale with Glass's suggesting that only its popularity will affect its residuals,The Ford Escort is not written off and is still popular. hut the number of late examples is starting to fall since production ended.

Latest versions of the Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner with the front-end redesign have an edge over the older models but they're thin on the ground, which is main taining prices. By contrast prices realised for the Renault Kangoo and Fiat Doblo are falling — Glass's says both are suffering from a "significant number of nearly new examples doing the rounds boasting low mileage and A I condition".
