Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The future

Since he arrived at CVA at the start of the year Matt Brookes has been busy addressing added-value sectors of the business. "We are keen to expand aspects of the industry like valeting that the corporate customers expect that is already in place and available to vendors and buyers," he says.

Rather than jump to compete with the big two directly, CVA is allowing the market to dictate its added-value services. "We are in the process of redeveloping the website; price guides might be something we might do in the future but there is no demand at the moment," says David Frizzell.

The same applies to electronic auctions, but perhaps the most important role is building a CVA brand across the sector by getting involved in establishing industry standards.

One definite plan for the future is a new auction site in Newtownabbey, Belfast. "It is initially for Northern Ireland with plans to expand it across the whole of Ireland," says Frizzell, "It will open in late March for an April start and will be bi-monthly, but success and demand will hopefully bring that tirnescale down. No UK auction is represented over there.

"Irish vehicles sell better in Ireland; in the UK residuals are just a bit lower," he adds. 'Vehicles are only sold through dealer purchases, or are shipped to the UK. The plan is for 100 trucks and trailers for the first sale."

Nigel Birkmyre, director of Ballyvesey, CVA's owners, says: "From a Ballyvesey point of view we are happy with the way things are going. We are also very happy to look at expansion." He adds that Ballyvesey has an open mind about opening another site outside of London to cater for the southern market.
