Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A bid for a licence for eight vehicles and eight trailers by SJ Slater Ltd to enable the company to take over the business of Preston haulier Stephen Slater has been granted by the North Western Deputy Traffic Commissioner Mark Hinchliffe.

The limited company had been trading since 2004 with a sole trader licence when it should not have done so. They were engaged in hauling Irish trailers from Heysham Docks and the poor state of some of those trailers had led to a number of prohibitions. Slater said he had been unaware they needed to apply for a new licence in the company's name and there was no difference in the operation. A transport consultant had been employed and the DTC accepted the surrender of the original sole trader licence.

Licence revoked

The licence held by James and Elizabeth Walton, trading as JNA Transport, of Blaydon-on-Tyne, has been revoked by the North Eastern Traffic Commissioner Tom Macartney. The company had been called before the TC because of concern over its maintenance record, and a check on its tachograph records had revealed missing mileage.

The licence was suspended indefinitely after nobody from the company had appeared in front of the Commissioner when the case first came before him in December.

At the adjourned hearing, James Walton told the TC the partnership had been dissolved at the end of last June. He agreed the company's nominated transport manager had had no involvement since May 2005.

Two-year disqualification

The four-vehicle licence held by Buxtonbased Corbuild has been revoked and the company and its directors disqualified from holding or obtaining an 0-licence in any Traffic Area for two years.

The licence had been suspended until a company representative came to public inquiry to explain to North Western TC Beverley Bell how its vehicles are maintained, its drivers are controlled and the interests of road safety are being met. The TC said solicitors had sought an adjournment as director Stephen Goodwin had been off work and the other director Brian Hadfield had not been a director for sometime. There were a number of serious convictions, plus problems over vehicle maintenance. One driver was not using the authorised operating centre.
