0 OK fish hauliers already hit by strict quotas on catches in the North Sea could lose even more work following an emergency 12-week ban on cod fishing.
The ban comes into effect on 12 February and will last for the 12 weeks of the cod spawning season. It covers 40,000 square miles of the North Sea.
Particularly affected will be the ports of Fraserburgh, Aberdeen, Lerwick and Peterhead in Scotland and Grimsby and Lowestoft In England.
One haulier working out of Peterhead has told Commercial Motor that the ban is necessary for the longterm future of the industry. "The ban cannot be helpful now, especially when it comes on the back of rising fuel costs," he adds. "However, anything designed to create more stability and long-term viability within the sector has to be accepted. With the transport industry in the state that it's in, some will really feel this."
The fishing industry is asking for a 1100m compensation package to offset the cuts—but none of this cash would go to hauliers.
