Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Ministry of Transport is hoping that the first stage of the new experimental lorry route to the London docks and markets will be introduced this summer and that the route will be fully Operational by the end of the year.

This was announced by Mr. Marples at a Press conference on Monday. when he gave details of revised plans for the mute, which was first proposed last April (The Commercial Motor, April 271.

Most of the route remains unaltered, . but important changes have been made in Finchley, Hornsey and Islington. The proposal for one-way working between The Bishops Avenue (Finchley) and the Archway Tavern junction has been dropped. That part of the lorry route will be confined, in both directions, to Aylmer Road and Archway Road, with a small one-way, circulatory system south of Wellington junction.

A major change in the plan is that between Highbury Corner and the docks there will be separate routes for day and night traffic.

Mr. Marples said the concept of the lorry route originally announced was generally welcomed, but that some aspects had met with considerable criticism, particularly the plan for one-way working in Finchley, Hornsey and Islington. which was to have taken all south-bound traffic on Al along the northern arm of The Bishops Avenue and down Archway Road, with all north-bound traffic going up" Highgate Hill and through Highgate Village. The Village is now to be bypassed.

The capacity of Archway Road will be improved by the imposit:on of peakhour clearway restrictions throughout its length. The carriageWay will be widened near junctions and certain right turns will be banned.

Apart from the changes outlined by Mr. Marples, the original proposals for the lorry route are to stand, though revised in the light of representations made to the Minister, principally to improve conditions for pedestrians and the layout of junctions.

In the City of London many busy streets, including Fleet Street, Ludgate Hill, Cheapside and Moorgate, will be banned as through routes for heavy goods vehicles, It is understood that provision will he made for lay-bys along the clearway sections of the route, which will carryan estimated 6,000 to 7.000 vehicles an hour.
