Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

1-1 A SERIOUS threat to commercial

vehicle production was the world shortage of nickel used in alloy steels for crankshafts, gears and axleshafts. Lord Brabazon of Tara, chairman and managing director of Associated Commercial Vehicles, Ltd., told the shareholders last week. Lack of alloy steel and certain types of drop forging was also putting the brake on production.

He announced that the Bridgernaster double-decker would go into production at the end of the year.

Looking into the future, Lord Brabazon said that results of the current year showed an improvement over those of lastyear, when turnover rose by some £2m. Nevertheless, the present situation was very disturbing.

The extra Is. duty on fuel had again increased the cost of living and caused demands for higher wages. [These, in the case of the A.C.V. group, have risen by more than 40 per cent. since 19501 It might well have serious repercussions on business during the current year. Competition abroad was extremely keen and price was of paramount importance.

• LICENCE FOR LOW-LOADER

THE North Western Deputy Licensing Authority on Monday granted a B licence to R. Gardner and Co. (Lancaster), Ltd.. for a vehicle of 81 tons unladen weight to tow a lowloader within 20 miles of base.

Mr. W. A. Gardner, manager of an associated company, R. Gardner (Luneside), Ltd., said that they were shipowners and brokers. They loaded and discharged ships at Glasson and Lancaster, but when ships could not reach Lancaster because of the tide it was necessary to move cranes quickly to Glasson or Heysham.

Hauliers in Preston, he said, required two days' notice to provide a towing vehicle, and this caused liability to demurrage.
