'THE implications of the judgments in the case of Lister v. The Romford Ice and Cold Storage Co., Ltd are being studied by the Government, Sir Reginald Manningham-Buller, AttorneyGeneral, told Mr. S. Silverman (Lab., Nelson and Colne) in the House of Commons on Monday.

Mr. Silverman asked whether, as a result of the House of LOrds' decision (The Commercial Motor, December 28, 1956), most drivers of vehicles owned by their employers were deprived of the benefit of insurance, and were thus committing daily offences against the Road Traffic Act.

Sir Reginald said that he was not yet able to make a statement, but he did not accept that the decision had the effect, in relation to the Act, that Mr. Silverman suggested.

A STRONG PLEA for the Govern

ment to co-operate with coach operators to save the Scottish tourist industry next summer was made by Mr. James Amos, chairman of the Scottish Omnibuses group, in Perth last week. Mr. Amos said it was difficult to estimate the seriousness of the effect fuel rationing would have on touring.

Coach operators, hotels and the Scottish Tourist Board had been doing their utmost to encourage hotels to. improve and extend their amenities. In many cases hotels relied wholly on coach operators for their business.

Mr. Amos said that the cut of 5-10 per cent. in operators' regular services assumed different proportions in summer. "Many of our regular services are, in fact, tourist services and cannot be disintegrated from the tours and privates hires which are operated in Scotland on a scale far in excess of anywhere else in Britain."

THREE APPLY TO REPLACE TROLLEYBUSES THREE operators are applying for I permission to run motorbus services between Leigh and Bolton, via Atherton, a route which is at present served by trolleybuses operated by South Lancashire Transport Co. They are S.L.T. and the municipal undertakings of Bolton and Leigh.

Leigh is opposing the S.L.T. and Bolton applications, and S.L.T., Lancashire United Transport, Ltd., and Bolton, that of Leigh. The applications are consequent on the decision of S.L.T. to replace all their trolleybuses by motorbuses.

Four of the trolleybuses sun on the route by S.L.T. belong to Bolton Corporation and are operated for them on the 21-mile stretch between the south-west borough boundary at Four Lane Ends and Howell Croft.
