Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Avonmouth Plant and Construe

tion Co., Ltd., were successful last week in obtaining from the Western Licensing Authority a B licence to operate a low-loader. Earlier proceedings were reported in the January 18 issue.

Mr. T. D. Corpe, for the company, said that the vehicle, a 10-tonner, was the first of its kind to be based at Monmouth. The grant of the licence would uot mean that the applicants would enter into competition with general hauliers. "We do not seek to go from point to point as the main low-loader people do," he said. "We are proposing to limit our activities to the industrialists who live in this comparatively small area and confine ourselves to their needs."

Mr. A. W. Balne, for the railways and British Road Services, said that they would lose traffic if the application were granted. Other objectors were Messrs. E. W. Badman and Sons, R. Giles, Ltd., and the Plant Transport and Installation Co.

The Authority said that because of the amount of building being done in the south-west, the low-loader would be useful for carrying equipment, such as rollers and excavators, which would otherwise require a larger outfit. The time had come when there should be a low-loader at Avonmouth.

• He granted a licence for work within 120 miles for customers with whom the applicants had contracted for the hire, purchase and sale of plant, and within 25 miles for other users.

L.T.E. CONSIDERING ANOTHER PAY CLAIM

ACLAIM for a "substantial increase" in the pay of 6,500 maintenance workers employed in the, road workshops of the London Transport Executive was presented by the unions last week. The L.T.E. representatives said they would consider the claim, and would arrange a further meeting with the unions.
