He claims the deal will set a benchmark for the industry: "This is the first step in the T&G's strategy for the express parcels sector to achieve minimum standards, dignity and respect in an industry that is extremely price sensitive with little customer loyalty.

The deal. which covers parcel sorters and loaders as well as drivers, was accepted by a majority of nearly three to one. the workforce rejected the company's previous offer by a margin of nine to one.

Turner says the next companies to be targeted by the campaign will be TNT and FedEx. but he adds: "It isn't a hostile campaign: we're looking to working with all the major international players.

At UPS a total of 150 truck drivers and 1,1(1) van drivers are covered by the deal.
