Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• As CMs campaign to register LGV training schools gathers pace MPs have been questioning the Government on its failure to raise LGV training to match standards imposed on motoring schools.

Last week in Parliament MPs David Chidgey and David Porter put oral questions to Steven Norris, Minister for Local Transport and Road Safety.

Porter, Conservative member for Waveney and president of the Institute of HGV Driving Instructors, asked if the Government would make it "policy to bring in a registration scheme for LGV instructors and driving schools similar to that governing car instructors".

Norris replied: "The Government has no plans to introduce a statutory register of goods vehicle driving instructors. Industry bodies are, however, considering a voluntary scheme with the Driving Standards Agency...offering a standards assurance service."

The Road Haulage & Distribution Training Council plans a voluntary system of approval for LGV training centres, to be operated by RTITI3 Services. LGV training schools would have to pay for this system would run on a fee paying basis.

However, RHDTC chief executive David Scott is a firm supporter of CIVrs campaign for compulsory registration.

David Chidgey, MP for Eastleigh, asked the minister: "What amount of correspondence has he received on the regulation of LGV driving schools?" Norris told the House he had received nine letters in the past year.
