• The UK's top 10 transport companies have voted on which of their competitors they most admire. Heading the road transport league are P&O, Tibbett & Britten and NFC; the fewest votes went to Eurotunnel.

Researchers for the Loughborough University Business School and Management Today magazine contacted the 10 largest quoted companies in the industry, based on their market capitalisation on 1 April 1994,

The 10 hauliers, and 10 transport analysts, were asked to assess their competitors on nine criteria; quality of management; financial soundness; ability to attract, develop and retain top talent; quality of products and services; value as a long-term investment; capacity to innovate; quality of marketing; community and environmental responsibility and use of corporate assets.

The survey covered 26 industrial sectors. British Airways and BAA, were the only two transport companies to feature in the top 100 companies.
