THE IMPORTANCE of ensuring that tippers engaged in heavy work receive more preventive maintenance than other vehicles was emphasised by South Wales Deputy Licensing Authority Ivor Pugh when a tipper operator, Ernest Derrick Jones of Builth Wells, appeared at disciplinary proceedings in Cardiff.

Mr Jones holds a licence authorising the operation of nine vehicles. Since 1981, nine prohibition notices have been imposed on his vehicles and a vehicle examiner complained about the state of his workshop.

Mr Jones said that the prohibitions mainly concerned one vehicle — a tipper with a heavy steel body, which was used on rough quarry work.

Problems had arisen when one of his fitters decided to become self-employed and work for him when required.

However, the fitter concerned was now back in his full-time employment and the problems seemed to have ironed themselves out.

He had "read the riot act" to the workshop staff and the fitter concerned had been told to "pull his finger out", otherwise they would be in trouble with the LA.

Since that warning, a further fleet inspection had been carried out by the Department of Transport vehicle examiners and everything was found to be in order.

Mr Pugh said that in view of the hard work on which the vehicles were employed, it was important to see that the extra attention was paid to them, thus making sure that Mr Jones complied with the conditions of his licence at all times.

Mr Pugh said that he proposed to put a warning on the records.
