• More drivers will be willing to take strike action over pay if they are not valued properly in the future, according to the Transport & General Workers Union.

The union made the warning following a long-running dispute at P&O Trans European where drivers eventually secured an improved pay deal after threatening to go on strike (CM 26-31 July), Ron Webb, the union's national secretary for transport, says the working time directive will demonstrate to drivers that they are worth more financially.

"The mood is changing in that drivers know they are becoming a scarce commodity," says Webb.

On the recently resolved P&O situation, Webb says: "It was quite an exercise to get where we did. We actuall went into conciliatory service at 02:00hrs o 19 July—a time when we are usually commn out!"
