TWO MEASURES will be introduced by the Government to tighten up on safety following the Dibble's Bridge coach accident in which 32 daytrippers lost their lives. These moves were announced in the Commons last week by Dr John Gilbert, Minister for Transport.

The inspection of the braking systems of public service vehicles is to be reinforced, and Dr Gilbert said that he was arranging for vehicle inspectors throughout the country to be informed on the mechanical causes of the accident.

He said that in the opinion of the Department's vehicle inspectors the cause of the accident was failure of the brakes resulting from the poor condition of the braking systems.

These were defective be cause of serious faults in tilt offside rear brake unit, corn pounded by faulty adjustmen of the front brakes.

The vehicle had undergon( its last annual inspection it December, when no seriotu defects had been discovered went on Dr Gilbert.

But he emphasised that those who operated psv hac a continuing responsibility tc ensure that their vehicles were properly maintained.

Public concern had beer expressed about the rooi strength of coaches and Di Gilbert said that he intendec to prescribe minimum strengtt requirements as soon as suitable 'technical standarc was available. But it would bE unrealistic to expect any coact design to withstand the im. pact of a 16ft drop as happen. ed at Dibble's Bridge.
