ROAD MAINTENANCE is be cut, perhaps by as much 20 per cent.
Dr John Gilbert, •the Tra port Minister, said in I Commons that he had decic to cut maintenance expenditt on trunk roads, and to tit local authorities to do same on their roads.
The economies, he add, should be made progressivi over some years so that th effect could be observed. Th might eventually amount some 15 to 20 per cent foreseen maintenance costs current prices.
The Minister said he expe ed the impact to be great on the less heavily traffich roads, but operations affecti road safety should be substz tially unchanged.
The effects would be chie perceptible in reducing ridi quality, footway maintenan and overall appearance.
