ENGINEERING requirements for the 1—, transport and mining industries in Rhodesia and Nyasaland are to be met by a new company, Brockhouse Allen, Ltd. J. Brockhouse and Co., Ltd., and W. G. Allen and Sons (Tipton), Ltd., are working together in the venture, with Brockhouse holding 60 per cent. of the £200,000 capital, and Allen's 40 per cent.
J. Brockhouse (Rhodesia), Ltd., will continue to act separately in Southern Rhodesia, but their factories in Ndola and Luanshya are to be acquired by the new company.
REVERSING INDICATORS
ONE-MAN RF-type single-deck buses operated by London Transport are to have indicators fitted to the rear on which the word " reversing " will light up
in red. They already have reversing lights which come on when reverse gear is engaged, but the L.T.E. say that "an additional and unmistakable warning is required."
The reversing indicator will consist of a rectangular red lens, 8 in. by 31 in., housed in a weatherproof steel pressing.
BUS SUBSIDIES SUGGESTED NAOST rural bus services in NorthumIVI berland will collapse within a few years unless some action is taken to maintain them, according to the annual report of Northumberland Rural Community Council. The council point out that fares cannot be raised any higher and operators are unable to make further economies, 'although some of them are losing 6d. a mile.
It is suggested that the long-term answer to the problem might be a system of subsidies.
MR. J. BIRCH IN HOSPITAL
Aa result of a ,motor accident last S week-end, Mr. John Birch, managing director of Birch Bros., Ltd., and chairman of the national executive committee of the Passenger Vehicle Operators Association, is now in Finchley Memorial Hospital, London.
The Commercial Motor was told on Tuesday that he was as comfortable as could be expected. He is likely to be. in hospital for several weeks.
LATEST IN SERVICE
NEW lubrication and service bays at the premises of Alexanders of Edinburgh. Ltd., were formally opened last Saturday by Mr. J. S. Kemp, general sales manager of the Ford Motor Co., Ltd.
The lubrication centre enables four vehicles to be accommodated at a time. The plant is of the latest Tecalemit type. The average time required to change the engine oil, check gearbox and rear-axle levels, spray springs, 'grease the chassis. top-up the battery and radiator, and check tyres pressures is 12 minutes.
Beside the lubrication centre there is a service bay with the latest equipment for testing brakes, wheel halance, light beams. wheel alignment and other points.
