FREE-LANCE DRIVERS' ASSOCIATION

AN association has been set up to vouch for the character and ability of free-lance drivers. Known as the Free-lance Drivers' Association, its organizing secretary is Mr. F. Cook, 16, Trederwen Road, London, E.8.

All members must have at least 15 years' clean-driving record, be qualified to drive any vehicle from a light car to a heavy vehicle, have some mechanical ability and know Britain and the Continent well.

Recommended fees for the hire of a free-lance driver are stated to be: Up to 100 miles, LI 6s.; 100-200 miles, £1 10s.; and for each mile over 200, 3d. Special rates can be quoted for long-term hire, holiday-relief work and so on. The men are responsible for their own National Insurance payments.

GLASGOW DRIVERS UNDER CONTRACT

BECAUSE so many men have been leaving for other employment after gaining public service vehicle driving licences at Glasgow Transport Department's driving school, the department has decided to put all new recruits under contract. A penalty of £10 may be exacted' if a driver leaves the corporation service after less than a year from the date of passing out from the school.

The department states that the cost of training drivers is such that it cannot afford men to leave as soon as they have passed the test.

1350,554 FOR SCOTS

FOUR Scottish haulage concerns are to receive £350,554 compensation under agreements confirmed by the Transport Arbitration Tribunal. Isaac Barrie, Ltd., is to be paid £187,891; W. P. Scott and Co., Ltd., £32,235; Universal Transport Co. (Scotland), Ltd., £92,428; and Peter Saddler and Co., Leitb, £38,000. With the exception of the last-named, all the concerns were based on Glasgow.

NEW BUS IN SERVICE

ANEW double-decker with folding ; NEW at the rear and heating equipment has been put into operation between Bristol and Cheltenham by the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd. It will be reserved for use on country services.
