ACOMMITTEE of seven men, with Mr. G. A. Thesiger, Q,C., Recorder of Hastings, as chairman; is to inquire into the public service vehicle licensing system. It has power to make recommendations. The Minister of Transport is anxious that the committee should start work as quickly as possible.

Members of the committee are Mr. R. F. Lyne, Sir Ronald Matthews, Mr. W. D. Reid, Mr. F. J. Speight, Mr. A. E. Tiffin and Mr. F.

Mr. Tiffin. as assistant general secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union, has been concerned particularly with road passenger transport. Mr. Williamson is chairman of the North' Western Licensing Authority.

R.H.A. CHECKS MARKET FOR TRANSPORT UNITS INFORMATION is being collected by 1 the Road Haulage Association from its 17,000 members and from its exmembers whose businesses were acquired, on the extent to which they would be willing to buy transport units. Each member is asked to state the approximate number of vehicles for which.he would like to tender, the class and capacity of vehicle desired, and whether a loan would be required to assist in completing the purchase.

£830,559 FOR 11 HAULIERS

ELEVEN compensation agreements totalling £830,559 were confirmed by the Transport Arbitration Tribunal in London, on Tuesday. Compensation is to be paid. by the Road Haulage Executive as follows:—

Thatcham Road Transport Service, Ltd., £253,000; S. L. Thomas (Barry), Ltd., £26,000; Joseph and Thomas Atkins, £175,000; Bate Bros. (Gornal). Ltd., £27,225; John Wilson and Wilfred Barker (Bee-Line Roadways), £83,000; Benjamin Keeling, £65,000; Monck ton Transport, Ltd., £48,548; A. and F. Heaton, Ltd., £25,000; Triggs and Chapman, Ltd., £60,000; Wilkinson Transport, Ltd., £37,786; John Buckley and Co., Ltd., £30,000.

THE general purposes committee of London County Council recommended on Tuesday that vehicles operated by local authorities should be exempt from the proposed levy.
