COVER STORY

christindatt7Eragooglemait.com A TRANSPORT CONSULTANT has attacked the actions of a VOSA officer who slapped an immobilisation notice on a truck full of perishable goods then clocked off from work without releasing it.

Steve Williams, consultant at Truck UK, says the vehicle examiner's decision was commercially damaging, bereft of customer care and undermined the work of all other enforcement officers. on the A57 at Worksop, Notts by a VOSA official and found to have an illegal tyre.

Williams says there is no argument over the issuing of a prohibition notice for the defective tyre, but effectively impounding the lorry while the driver and unnamed company desperately tried to save the perishable load of fresh fruit and veg, as well as replace the tyre was a step too far.

He continues: "What's more, the driver was told the vehicle would not be released until the next morning, at least, since the examiner was 'clocking-off at 4pm.

"It concerns me that such a commerciallâ–  damaging decision, when safety is definitely not being compromised as the defective tyre was changed within an hour of the prohibition being imposed, can be made by an examiner at the roadside [especially] when it involves a perishable load and the need for an examiner to 'clock off:" VOSA was asked to comment on its officer's actions in light of recent announcements that the government agency wishes to demonstrate flexibility to the industry, but a spokeswoman would only say: -VOSA cannot comment on individual cases, and we would advise the driver to go through the correct channels if he wishes to make a complaint."
