Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A " REVOLUTIONARY " agreement 4-1 entered into by 10 Bristol coach operators which will allow them to enter each other's "spheres of influence," has been approved by the Western Licensing Authority.

"We hope that both the public and the operators will benefit," was the comment of the Authority, Mr. S. W. Nelson.

The operators are: Wessex Coaches, Ltd.; P.V.O.A., Ltd.; Severn Valley Motors; Empress Coaches; W.E.M.S.; Imperial Coaches; Monarch Coaches; Primrose Motor Coaches, Ltd.; G. Feltham and Sons; and Bristol Co-operative Society.

Mr. G. H. McMurtrie, for Wessex Coaches, denied an accusation that his clients were trying to run smaller operators off the road.

" Wessex Coaches felt that the existing system of spheres of influence in Bristol was archaic," he said, "and I said at that time [an earlier hearing] that it was the policy of Wessex that Bristol should be regarded as an open city where there should be co-operation between operators for the benefit of the public.

"Since this policy has now been happily adopted by the operators," Mr. McMurtrie went on, "the policy as put forward has been completely vindicated by the agreement."

Mr. T. D. Corpe, for the operators who originally objected, said that he hoped that Wessex Coaches would practise what Mr. McMurtrie preached, adding: " These operators are very willing now to co-operate with Wessex. They feel as small operators they are safe in_entertaining this entirely revolutionary arrangement."

U.S. AND BRITISH ENGINEERS TO CONFER

PRACTICAL cornbustion problems are to be discussed in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A., and London, at two conferences at which abstracts of 40 papers will be presented. The papers deal with the results of theoretical work in the fields of boilers, furnaces, internal-combustion engines and gas turbines.

'The aim of the conferences, which will be held in Boston from June 15-17 and in London from October 25-27, is to link theory and practice, and to assist in collecting all modern material which may relate to the subject of combustion.

Seventeen institutions and societies in this country will support the conferences, which have been organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in Boston.

Advance copies of the papers are to be published by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for sale only and these, it is understood, will be available during April.
