Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CONTRARY to expectations, no date for the next meeting of the National Joint Industrial Council, at which the speed limit on heavy vehicles is to be discussed, was fixed by the Road Haulage Wages Council on Monday. It is, however, expected to take place soon. • The council met to consider objections to the proposals contained inR..H.(53) for an increase in basic wages and night rates. It is understood that the number of objections was smaller than usual and was well under 50. R.H.(53) was approved and now goes to the Minister of Labour for ratification.

BUSES CARRY 77.6% OF WORKERS

ASURVEY of travel arrangements of Birmingham industrial workers, undertaken in June-July last by Birmingham Junior Chamber of Commerce, showed that the two main bus operators carried 77.6 per cent of passengers. Only 6 per cent. used trains, despite the lower average cost and the higher average speed.

The average time taken to travel to work was 37 minutes and that to return 44 minutes. Cost per day averaged Is. 2d., or 1.22d. a mile. These facts were given at a council meeting of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce on Monday.

R.H.A. PENSION SCHEME AGREED

AGREEMENT has been reached by the pension sub-committee of the Road Haulage Association on a model pension scheme to be recommended for adoption by hauliers. The scheme was considered at a meeting of the Association's executive committee on Wednesday. Its provisions may be published shortly.

GLASGOW TO SCRAP 300 TRAMS

OVER the next five years, 300 of Glasgow's 1,000 trams are to be scrapped and 10 routes converted to motorbus or trolleybus operation. This has been decided by Glasgow Transport Committee after the submission of a plan by Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, general manager of the transport undertaking.
