Long and Short 5-tonners with Drop-sided and Tipping Bodies Respectively Offered at Prices that are Attractive FOR the use of civilian operators engaged on essential transport, who can obtain Ministry of War Transport licences to acquire, two Bedford models are ,being released by Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., Luton, Beds, They are both 5-tonners, one being a drop-sided lorry with 157-in, wheelbase and the other a 111-in. • wheelbase hydraulic tipper.

• It is stated that reasonably prompt delivery can be given in the case of the former, but that the latter is available, for the time being, in somewhat

limited numbers. Nevertheless this trews will be welcomed by commercialvehicle operators generally, particularly in view of the fact that the prices of the new chassis represent what may , be regarded as a moderate percentage , increase on those at which the Bedford 5-tonner was offered in 1939 when it was first introduced.

These arA the present figures:—Long model, chassis and cab, £405; dropsided lorry, £448. Short model, chassis and cab, £390; hydraulic end-tipper, £475.

Although the appearance of the new Bedfords is considerably altered by the latest radiator and bonnet, based, in its design, on the Service types, the chassis are characterized by most of the features with • which we were familiar in the models produced just before the outbreak of war. For example, the well-known six-cylindered engine is installed, the braking system incorporates the Dewandre-Lockheed vacuumservo-hydraulic apparatus, with independent front and rear circuits, progressive-action suspension, with the addition of helper springs at the rear, is standardized, and the cab is an allsteel unit equipped with separate seats for driver and mate.

The frames are of the new type that appeared in 1939 and the rear axles are of the iinprOved design that was also a feature of the model that then made its first appearance With regard to.the tyre equipment, ...this is the same for both' the long and the short models. On the front wheels, 32 by 6 heavy-duty tyres are used, whilst the rear', wheels are shod with 34 by 7 heavy-duty twins and the larger size is provided on the spare wheel.

Measurink inside 14 ft. long and 6 ft. 6 ins, wide, the lorry body has• 1-ft.

6-in. sides: The weight of the con); plete vehicle unladen is approximately 2 tons 14i cwt. Of 4 cubic yds. capacity the tipper has a hardwood body with steel floor, its internal dimensions being 8 ft. l ins. long, 6 ft. 6 ins, wide and 2 ft, 1 in. deep. In this case the taxation weight is 2 tons 11 cwt. 14 lb.

Designed to afford a tipping angle of 45 to 50 degrees, the hydraulic gear is of the self-priming type and incorporates a Weston. pump attached directly to the gearbox from which it is, of course, .driven.

The compensated voltage control electrical systhm operates at 12 volts.
