Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Eastern Area A.R.O. recently circulated a questionnaire dealing with the problem of labour in. reference to the transport oI sugar beet during the forthcoming campaign. As the outcome it appears likely that some hauliers may not be aware that a deferment of calling up can be granzed in cases where it is in the national interest that the man should be.allowed to remain in his civilian employment for a limited period. It is not possible to obtain total exemption for any man whose age and occupation render him liable for military service, but deferment up to six months may be obtained if a sufficiently good case can be made out.

This period is, of course, granted to enable the employer to make such alternative arrangements as may be possible and to obtain or train a new driver. However, where towards the end of such period of deferment •it-has not been found possible to make other plans, an extension may he obtained if it be applied for about a fortnignt before expiry. It will be appreciated that deferment is only .given for reasons of real urgency, and an extension is granted only if it can be shown that every effort has been made to cover the position, but without success, •

In no case should applications for deferment be left until the man has been called for his medical examination. They should, be made immediately a man registers, or immediately it is known that his continued services are required in the interests of the nation.

The necessary fermi; of application may be obtained from the Area Office; the form is known as N.S.100.
