RHA INSURANCE insists that operators who fit anti-theft devices to their vehicles can earn discounts on their insurance premiums. This follows a claim from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) that no discounts are available.
Larry Smith, MD of RHA Insurance, says: "We recognise the importance of truck security systems. "All of our products are underwritten by leading insurers who offer discounts for Thatcham-approved and insurer-approved factory-fitted systems,"
But the SMMT claims the industry fails to give any discounts to encourage truck manufacturers or operators tof it anti-theft devices. It has also hit out at the Thatcham centre for setting anti-theft standards for trucks that are both "needlessly expensive for manufacturers to meet" and out of step with the rest of Europe.
Robin Dickeson, manager of commercial vehicle affairs at the SMMT, says: "All this would be more or less acceptable if insurance companies gave discounts on insurance premiums for trucks that meet their own security standards.
"But they don't—they fall to deliver."
A Thatcham spokeswoman plays down the SMMT's comments and says that it wants its security standards to drive down truck crime.
