Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The number of truck and van recalls has almost trebled year-on-year, with a total of 18,621 vehicles called back by manufacturers for modifications during the past six months.

Recall figures rose sharply in 1999, from 6,316 vehicles in the first six months to 10,955 in the second half of the year.

Daihatsu led the most recent figures from the Vehicle Inspectorate, with 8,861 petrol Hjjets recalled for a check on fuel tank corrosion and 3,113 diesel Hjjets for a test on the fuel rail. In the worst case the rail could fracture allowing fuel into the lubrication system and causing the engine to increase in speed of its own accord.

Brake servo valve problems affected Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner vans and 1,139 Vauxhall Movanos and Arenas. Dennis Eagle recalled 262 Elite 4x2 and 6x2 trucks because of brake problems, while Iveco contacted the owners of 172 its trucks

for braking and cab-tilt problems.

Braking problems also affected 827 F65, F75 and F85s from Oaf, which recalled a further 69 F75s because of problems with rear-steering axles.

MAN recalled 1,584 M2000s fitted with the L2000 cab because of the risk of fire from the air filter and Scania recalled 39 Series 4 units to check the spare wheel securing bolts.

Volvo conducted nine recall campaigns affecting 1,485 of trucks.
