Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

111 Intertrail Rentals is to buy two companies — one in distribution and one in contract hire — that will expand its operations in the UK.

John Goodreid, managing director of Intertrail (a subsidiary of the French banking group Societe Generale) says the company had selected several companies for acquisition, but on closer inspection they had proved worthless.

"Many contract hire operations have overtraded and will go to the wall very soon as the market has dipped considerably," he says. "We restructured our organisation eight months ago and are in a good position to ride the storm. Negotiations over our latest acquisitions will be completed by the end of the year."
