Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• As well as 'green' issues, this year's Frankfurt show reflected the dimensional changes planned for 1990.

Trailer builders and body manufacturers specialising in curtainsiders, reefers and tankers all had exhibits built with 16.5m artic combination lengths in mind.

Few British manufacturers were present, although some of the larger corporate names such as Boalloy Tautliner, Craven Tasker, Crane Fruehauf and York appeared courtesy of their continental branches or partners.

DEEP FROZEN

Norfrig's wholly-owned West German subsidiary Staufen of Eislingen produced a stylish, second generation chassisless reefer for deep frozen work at temperatures down to —24°C.

It is only the fifth such model built for 16.5m artic operation and retails at around £67.000, less the cost of the freezer unit. pallets, and there is provision for an ext floor that can carry as many again, weig permitting.

It is built on tri-axled air-suspended Kassbohrer running gear and was show coupled to an MAN 19.462 with full roc cab side and chassis fairings.

Thermo King's latest SB-11 freezer unit was fitted; it uses the non-CFC refrigerant H134A. All current units ca be converted to using this.

Frigoblock introduced its latest HK26EG front-mounting freezer unit, built for the larger 33-pallet artic trailei

Weighing just 390kg, including alternator, it has a refrigeration capacii of 8,500W at —20/+30°C which is a 30°, gain over its previous top-of-the range overcab model, the FK25. Both freeze use R22/R502 refrigerant and are available in two-speed 'quieter' SL versions.

Among the varied automatic load/ discharge systems on display was an improved and lighter version of Joloda Moving Floor in-truck arrangement.

It uses a smaller electronic controlle and a more compact drive gearbox in i now modular construction. Joloda reports more applications to join its growing lists of overseas agents, which its credit includes some in Japan and tl USA.

Lamberet exhibited two new model. Frankfurt: its 13.6m reefer unit, and it unusual City-Trailer with insulated tai lift rear closure.

The chassisless Cargofrigo's selfsupporting bodywork features bondec GRP panelling and has a 13.38m inne. length for carrying up to 33 Euro pall( It uses Carriers' new underslung freez with its 315mm-deep evaporation unit into the headboard, giving a flush internal head wall inside.

The City-Trailer closes up using a 2,000kg tail lift in place of rear doors. made by MBB of Bremerhaven (now of Daimler-Benz).

The lift's insulation achieves a 0.37' K-value, and a plastic strip curtain he reduce heat gain in operation. Lambe fits stainless steel floor panels to help reduce noise from trolley wheels.

ipitzers tanker group claimed the ord on volume at the show with a huge n.. stepped aluminium tanker for rying dry bulk products at the new 5m artic lengths.

Elie 14.04m semi tips on side-mounted va rams and discharges at 0.9bar using external air supply. Its stainless steel :let turns through 3600 and the aeration is easily removed with a single screw tener.

With its aluminium chassis and tri W air-suspended axle on 235/75R 17.5 singles, the tanker tares at 8,650kg, but with a standard steel frame is nearer nine tonnes.

Spitzer says it is producing around 600 units a year; 95% of them in aluminium. It also uses CAD/CAM equipment and photoelectric-controlled plasma-cutting machinery in its production of pressure vessels.

GLASS CARRIERS

There were several West Germanmade internal float glass carriers on display. Arhaus-based Orthaus's latest six-wheeled semi provides electrohydraulic securing equipment and comes with audible and visual load safety warning systems linked to the cab.

The 10.2m trailer and its BPW air suspended stub axles carry the glass/ mirror stillages within a 1.57m-wide centre space. It has a 7.1-tonne tare weight and a 26.7-tonne load capacity in standard form.
